Learning and development

To ensure a quality play environment that is safe and welcoming, all staff at Desmond Anderson Nursery hold a recognised childcare qualification. They attend further personal training to continue their own development within the early years profession, including all statutory training, such as Paediatric First Aid, Health and Safety, Safeguarding/Child Protection, and Food Hygiene.

Play underpins all development and learning for young children. The nursery provides your children with a free-flow environment where independence is encouraged through access to resources and equipment, both inside and out. With support from nursery staff children can develop their own play, individually or with others.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is divided into Prime and Specific areas of learning and development.

The Prime areas are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language Development
  • Physical Development.

The Specific areas cover:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

Together these areas make up the skills, knowledge and experiences appropriate for babies and children as they grow, learn and develop. For each of the above areas there are stages of progress that most children will follow to meet the Early Learning Goals at the end of their reception year.

We provide a wide range of resources and experiences, both inside and out, where children can begin to investigate, explore and understand the world around them giving equal importance to each area of learning.
